NEW CASTLE — After more than a year of planning and preparing for the Democratic National Convention, Delaware’s delegates are looking forward to finally arriving in Denver to help formally nominate Senator Barack Obama as the party’s nominee for President of the United States.

Elected officials, party leaders, union workers, educators, lawyers, scientists and other professionals coming from a diverse mix of cultures, races, and ages from all over Delaware will represent the First State next week as Democrats converge on the Mile High City for the convention, which officially runs from August 25th-28th.

“I’m proud to chair a delegation comprised of so many dedicated Democrats,” said Delegation Chairman John Daniello.  “It’s a tremendous privilege to be attending such a historic convention.  I believe the excitement and momentum Senator Barack Obama’s campaign and Democrats have generated so far will reach an extraordinary altitude during this convention.  Hopefully, that enthusiasm will inspire many Delawareans to not only campaign for Obama, but for Democratic candidates over the state, helping ensure victory on Election Day.”

While in Denver, our delegation will participate in various official activities, including the adoption of the party platform and nomination of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates.  Also awaiting the delegation is the Delegate Service Day, a series of volunteer projects throughout the Denver metro area that range from reading to children to cleaning up neighborhoods to serving food in homeless shelters.  These events will allow delegates to contribute to and celebrate the people and organizations of the host city.

Delegates will see the highlight of the convention on Thursday, August 28th as Senator Obama is expected to officially accept the party’s nomination for president in front of more than 70,000 people at Invesco Field at Mile High, home of the Denver Broncos football team.

“For those in the delegation who didn’t get a chance to be a part of Sen. Obama’s Rodney Square event last February, this will be a rare opportunity to witness a truly inspirational moment in history,” said Delaware Democratic Party Executive Director Molly Jurusik. “We’re all looking forward to it.”
