Carper, Democrats Stand Together to Bring Healthcare Reform to Delawareans
Tuesday, October 31, 2006(Delaware Democratic Party)
NEW CASTLE, DE— U.S. Senator Tom Carper, Insurance Commissioner Matt Denn, and ten local Democratic candidates gathered at a local home daycare center today to discuss the growing healthcare crisis in Delaware and what can be done to stem it.
Sen. Carper spoke about the difficulties we face as a nation, spending twice as much as anyone else but not getting the results we need. Small businesses are facing a unique challenge, according to Carper, and it was a sentiment echoed by the other Democrats present.
“Because small businesses have smaller workforces, they don't have the negotiating power that larger companies have when it comes to seeking the lowest premiums and the best insurance,” said Carper. “Over the past five years, the number of small businesses that provide health insurance has dropped 10 percent, leaving more and more Americans without quality health coverage.”
Commissioner Denn took the lead in identifying three bills that were overwhelmingly – and with bipartisan support – passed in the State Senate, but were killed in the State House by Republicans who refused to allow them to a vote.
“If we want to be sure that Delaware gets this healthcare reform, we need to elect Democrats to the House of Representatives,” Denn said.
Denn then introduced each of the Democratic candidates on the November ballot. The candidates all spoke briefly about unique ways that our current healthcare system has impacted their districts.
