President Obama Introduces American Jobs Act, Urges Congress to Put Country Ahead of Politics
09 September 2011
We’ve all witnessed our country’s leaders put politics over what’s best for our working families. Now, the only way to help struggling Americans and work toward long-term economic recovery is through real action. Last night, President Obama announced the American Jobs Act in a joint session of Congress. “The purpose of the American Jobs Act is simple: to put more people back to work and more money in the pockets of those who are working,” said President Obama.
The American Jobs Act is based on ideas supported by Democrats and Republicans alike. Nothing about the bill should be considered controversial.
“Both parties agree that government must create an environment that gives employers the incentives and confidence they need to hire new workers,” said Congressman John Carney. “Congress should pass this legislation to create jobs in the short-term and make America more competitive in the long-term.”
Last night, President Obama said, “The American Jobs Act will lead to new jobs for construction workers, for teachers, for veterans, for first responders, for young people, and for the long-term unemployed. It will provide tax credits to companies that hire new workers, tax relief to small business owners, and tax cuts for the middle class.”
And paying for the bill will be done fairly without adding a dime to our deficit: it will close corporate tax loopholes and ask the wealthiest Americans to finally pay their fair share. We need to rebuild our economy through a balanced and fair approach that makes sure people are rewarded for hard work and penalized for not playing by the rules.
"We need to use this opportunity to rebuild our manufacturing sector and bring jobs back from overseas,” said U.S. Senator Tom Carper. “We need to use this opportunity to invest in education to prepare the next generation to be competitive in a global marketplace. We need to use this opportunity to repair our nation's decaying infrastructure, which will create thousands of jobs building American roads and railways designed for the 21st century.”
U.S. Senator Chris Coons said, “There is no shortage of good ideas, only a lack of political will to act. The President laid out a clear challenge tonight, insisting that Republicans put the American economy ahead of partisan ideology.”
It’s time for us to work together to make real change. President Kennedy once said, “Our problems are man-made –- therefore they can be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants.” Now Congress needs to put country ahead of politics, and pass the American Jobs Act.
