New Castle – In an unprecedented show of grassroots support, over 100 volunteers turned out Saturday to knock on doors and talk to voters about Democratic Party candidates and remind voters about the upcoming midterm election.
The canvass was part of the national “Moving America Forward” weekend of action, co-sponsored by Organizing for America and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Early reports indicate that Delaware’s at-large congressional district had more volunteers out than any other congressional district in the country.
In response to the overwhelming success of the weekend’s activities, Coordinated Campaign Chairman Jim Paoli issued the following statement:
“We are absolutely thrilled at level of support our candidates have gotten across the state so far. We have never seen this kind of excitement over general-election candidates this early. Even if the national narrative is that this will be a bad year for Democrats, I look at the excitement among our base and think that those judgments are just downright wrong for Delaware. Our voters are energized, they are motivated, and we are going to get them out this fall to support our Democratic Party ticket.”
Following the canvasses, volunteers were joined by other activists and Democrats at the annual Sussex County Democratic Jamboree, typically viewed as the kick-off to the fall campaign season. There, they heard from prominent Democrats such as Senators Tom Carper and Ted Kaufman, Chris Coons and John Carney, and many local elected officials and candidates. Most repeated the same point: After eight years of Republicans driving our country into a ditch, Democrats have made great progress to putting us back on the road to greatness – and we are not about to give the keys back now.
