David Plouffe: Chris can win. You can help. Posted by Ian Koski on June 23, 2010 at 11:40 am David Plouffe, a Delaware native and the campaign manager of President Obama’s 2008 campaign, just sent a message to Chris' supporters discussing the importance of this election. Your support of Chris will have both local and national implications. Check out what David had to say and then please consider donating to the campaign today. I grew up in Wilmington and attended St. Mark's High School and the University of Delaware. It's critical for our home state to have strong and progressive leadership. But the U.S. Senate race in Delaware has high stakes for the country this November. That's why we must elect Chris Coons to the Senate. Chris is a leader on so many of the issues important to all of us, like creating jobs here at home by eliminating incentives for corporations to ship jobs overseas. He's the leader Delaware needs in Washington and, with your support, he'll be Delaware's next Senator. At this time three years ago, few believed that Barack Obama could win the democratic primary, let alone the general election. The press was obsessed with national polls and the pundits counted us out. But I've seen firsthand that a smart, tough candidate can win by empowering grassroots supporters to take action block by block, precinct by precinct. Chris can win. That's where you come in. Your support will help Chris deliver his message to voters throughout the state. Together we can stand up to Washington lobbyists and special interests and once again prove that ordinary citizens who love this country can change it. But we can't do this without you. Chris will be a powerful voice in the U.S. Senate for Delaware's families. But it's up to all of us to help get him to Washington. Thank you, Click here to visit Chris' website.

Watch: Chris Coons says General McChrystal “Has to be Respectful of Civilian Authorities”Posted by Ian Koski on June 22, 2010 at 5:07 pmIn an interview with ABC News and the Washington Post Tuesday, Chris talked about General Stanley McChrystal's comments to Rolling Stone Magazine, in which he was sharply critical of President Obama and his administration. "We have a long tradition of civilians being responsible for oversight of the military," Chris said, "and Gen. McChrystal — if he's going to be the effective, engaged commander on the ground in Afghanistan he needs to be — has to be respectful of the civilian authorities over him. I'm hopeful that that's gonna be the outcome of his meetings in Washington this week." Click here to watch the interview with Chris.

Delaware politics: Secretive 'pigs fly' campaign takes aim at Schwartzkopf Anti-tax — and often anti-facts — attacks take to the road in DoverBY DAN SHORTRIDGE AND GINGER GIBSON • THE NEWS JOURNAL • JUNE 26, 2010 Anonymous foes of House Majority Leader Pete Schwartzkopf have ramped up their efforts to unsettle the Rehoboth Beach Democrat, paying for a billboard on wheels to circle Dover this week. The billboard, plastered on the side of a truckfrom G-Mobile ADZ, features a winged pig and Schwartzkopf's home phone number. The group has created a website, Facebook page, fliers, bumper stickers and a stationary billboard along U.S. 9 outside Lewes. The website, onlywhenpigsfly.org, and the group's literature target Schwartzkopf's votes to raise taxes – but in several instances misrepresent Schwartzkopf's record. In an e-mail to The News Journal, someone at the website declined to identify him- or herself or to arrange a phone interview. Schwartzkopf said he suspects the campaign is funded by people who live outside his district. He chastised their anonymous tactics. "As far as I'm concerned, they don't have any honor," he said. … Tax allegations falseThe fliers claim Schwartzkopf voted to raise a "cable TV tax … telephone tax, cell phone tax, Internet tax," but none of those taxes were raised or even considered in 2009. The increase to the home satellite tax explicitly prevented raising tax rates for cable television.
False allegations like these could hurt our Democratic candidates in the state. Click here to help Pete fight back.

HB 353 Would Have Been UnconstitutionalDELAWARE VOICE • BY ROBERT F. GILLIGAN, PETER C. SCHWARTZKOPF AND VALERIE J. LONGHURST • JUNE 23, 2010 The U.S. Congress made an important and historic decision when it approved health care reform legislation in April. The issue has been around for decades and has been an extremely complex one to tackle. Even in passing the legislation, there still are differing opinions. Some have called for states to take action against health care reform. It is against that backdrop that House Bill 353 was filed. However, following a review of the bill and the relevant case law, our House attorneys noted several potential problems with House Bill 353 as written. Our attorneys concluded that the bill, as written, would likely be declared unconstitutional and would create more problems than it hopes to address. None of this appeared in Rep. Deborah Hudson's June 22 Delaware Voice column, which painted the issue as partisan instead of addressing the numerous concerns raised about the legislation. The Doctrine of Separation of Powers is a rule forbidding one branch of government from exercising powers exclusively assigned to another, and forbidding one branch of government from allowing its powers to be exercised by another branch. HB 353 would likely be held to violate the Separation of Powers doctrine as it takes an essential function of the executive branch (the Attorney General) — the decision of whether to bring forth a lawsuit — away from that office. Read the rest of Gilligan, Schwartzkopf and Longhurst's column here.

Governor Calls for National Commitment to Building Jobs in an Innovation Economy
Markell, Gephardt, Private/Public Sector Leaders Focus on Medical Innovation and Finding Cures
“It is critical to our national and economic interest that we own medical innovation in the future as thoroughly as we owned mechanical innovation in the past. We need continued leadership in promoting critical bio-medical industries in order to secure the jobs of the future. We’re talking about unleashing the American spirit of enterprise and our entrepreneurial energy to tackle not just the next great economic opportunity but the next great medical discovery,” said Governor Markell. “Delaware has a well-earned reputation as a cradle of innovation.” “Medical innovation presents the best opportunity to help innovate our way out of the health and economic crises facing America today, but it’s clear the clock is ticking,” said Congressman Gephardt, Chairman of CAMI. “Advancing a national strategy for medical innovation that engages all sectors – public, private and academic – through empowered federal office is an effective first step.” |
