Delaware Democratic Party: Bench Castle!

Three strikes and you’re out! That’s the rule in baseball, and we think it should apply in politics too. That’s why we’re calling on Delaware voters to bench Mike Castle.

Today, the Delaware Democratic Party launched a new micro-site at www.benchcastle.com. The site is part of a continuing effort to educate voters on Castle’s record – and how it fails to live up to his rhetoric.

“Three times now, Castle has taken credit for projects funded through the stimulus – a program he opposed in Congress last year,” said Katie Ellis, Communications Director for the Delaware Democratic Party. “Delaware voters deserve better than Washington double-talk from Congressman Castle; they deserve to know whether he will stand up for their interests. So far this session, Castle has shown that he’s much more beholden to the Republican caucus than he is to Delaware voters.”

The vote against the stimulus package is just one of many party-line votes Castle has taken this session. He also voted with his caucus against the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, against the FY 2010 Budget, against healthcare reform, against financial regulatory reform, and against several jobs bills that would have positively impacted Delaware.

Three times over the past three months, Castle has taken credit for projects funded through the stimulus:

  • In January, Castle took credit for over $5 million in home heating assistance funds, paid for through a HUD project funded by the stimulus.
  • In February, Castle called for additional funding for high speed rail projects- funding that would come through the stimulus.
  • And just yesterday, Castle took credit for helping secure an education grant for the state- a project that never would have been available if not for the stimulus.

Why would we ever send another member of the Party of NO to the US Senate. We need a strong Democratic candidate who can elicit confidence from the Delaware voters that will ensure that the Senate remains in Democratic hands and that the Democratic majority will even be increased. The same applies to the House. We need a strong candidate to ensure that our sole Representative espouses Democratic values and is a proponent of progressive positions on the critical issues that face our state and our nation.
