NEW CASTLE — Chris Coons, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and New Castle County Executive, today commented on Delaware winning the first round of “Race to the Top” education funding.  The state will receive $100 million over the next four years to improve the delivery of education.

“I am thrilled that Delaware has been awarded a $100 million ‘Race to the Top’ grant, which was funding through the Recovery Act.

“The state government, school boards, educators and the business community worked tirelessly to implement reforms that otherwise might not have been possible.  I want to commend Governor Markell, Secretary Lowery, the Delaware State Education Association, Vision 2015, and all the teamwork and cooperation that went into making Delaware’s application the best in the country.

“Over the objections of Congressional Republicans, including Mike Castle, the Recovery Act was passed in order to put people back to work, bolster our crumbling infrastructure, and reinvest in America through programs like ‘Race to the Top.’  However, voting against the bill did not stop Congressman Castle from celebrating the award yesterday.  I am running because Delawareans want a U.S. Senator whose rhetoric matches how they cast their vote when it counts.”
