A week after the president demanded “a swift up or down vote” on his nominees (but not on any of the Democratic agenda), the Senate decided they’d heard enough blowharding and will give the American people a long overdue minimum wage hike, 10 years a-comin’. (via CQ)
The Senate today voted 87-10 to limit debate on legislation combining small-business tax breaks with a minimum wage increase, paving the way for passage by week’s end.
“That’s an extraordinarily strong vote, and it certainly indicates that progress is going to be made on this issue — I would certainly hope the sooner, the better,” declared Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., the bill’s floor manager.
The tax package helped win substantial Republican support for the three-step, $2.10 hourly wage increase, the first in 10 years. It would boost the minimum to $7.25 an hour.
Finally.
